Formal contributions to reliability practice

ISO Standards

Empirical foundations for international standards

OREDA’s data structures, taxonomies, and analytical methodologies have played a foundational role in the development of internationally recognised reliability and maintenance standards.

ISO 14224

Collection and exchange of reliability and maintenance data for equipment
Establishes a common taxonomy and framework for reliability data across the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries.

ISO 20815

Production assurance and reliability management
Provides lifecycle guidance for managing availability, reliability, and maintainability of production systems.

ISO/TR 12489

Reliability-centred maintenance (RCM)
Supports structured maintenance decision-making using reliability data.

OREDA Handbooks

Published reliability data — curated and validated

OREDA handbooks present selected, pre-analysed reliability data drawn from the wider OREDA database.
They are designed to support engineering studies, benchmarking, and reference use where direct database access is not available.

  • Published in multiple editions since the 1980s
  • Coverage of topside and subsea equipment
  • Data quality-assured through member review
  • Widely cited in industry and academic literature

The most recent public edition (6th edition) was published in 2015. Distribution of the handbooks is managed by DNV.

Technical Papers

Peer-reviewed research underpinned by OREDA data

OREDA data and methodologies have been used extensively in peer-reviewed technical papers and conference publications over several decades.

These works typically address:

The presence of OREDA data in such publications reflects its acceptance as a neutral, high-quality empirical source within the global reliability community.

Scientific Citations

A long-standing reference in academia and industry

OREDA is one of the most frequently cited sources of empirical reliability data within the energy sector.

Its datasets and methods are referenced across:

  • Peer-reviewed journals
  • Academic research projects and doctoral theses
  • Industry guidance and decision-support studies

This sustained citation record reflects the depth, consistency, and credibility of OREDA’s work over more than four decades.

Relationship to OREDA@Cloud

Publications and digital access — distinct but aligned

Standards and publications present formal, static outputs derived from OREDA’s work.
Digital access to structured datasets is provided separately through OREDA@Cloud, where data can be searched, filtered, and analysed.

Details of platform functionality, access levels, and subscriptions are covered elsewhere.

For over four decades, OREDA has stood at the intersection of data, engineering, and collaboration — supporting safer, more reliable energy production worldwide.
